Waggoner PTO General Meeting Minutes

In attendance:  Lesley McCoy, Barbara Crawford, Stacey Novis, Autumn Muir, Lisa Ross,  Colleen Walters, Michelle Kamolz, Christie Patterson, Courtney Johnson, Kelly Davis, Tessa Lamb, Jim Kenehan, Carol Krupinsky, Tara Glidden, Mindy Douglas, Denise Janda, Peggy Cheney, Jeni Humly, Hollie Schineller, Sheri Merkel, Ingrid McCann

Meeting called to order @ 8:15am, Reading Area

1.      September Minutes Review & Acceptance

a.       Accepted  =  1st:  Lisa; 2nd: Christie

 

2.      Fall Fundraiser Update - Tara:

a.       Reference “2008-2009 PTO Fundraiser” sheet handout

b.       Donations down $3620 most likely attributed to the current state of the economy, stock market plunge, $700 billion bailout by government, uncertainty

c.       Lower grades have been more involved

d.       Tara to review donations made by 3-5 grades

e.       Reminders of fundraisers may not be making it into backpacks timely

f.        This position chair is open for next year.  Tara has a well organized plan to pass to the next chairperson.

 

3.      Treasurer’s Report - Autumn:

a.       Reference “Profit & Loss Detail, Sept 08”

 

4.      Upcoming Expenses:

a.       Professional Learning Committee Conference, in Phx, Oct 25-28

v      $2067 is needed to send Ken or Heidi and two additional teachers

v      Main focus is to improve student learning; what’s working/what’s not; just in time professional development

v      Many techniques from the conference attended by Ken and Heidi last year are being implemented; Team meetings occur 1st Wed of each month

v      Vote:  To spend $2067 of the PTO funds for 2 teachers and either Ken or Heidi to attend this year’s conference in Phoenix

Ø      1st=Kelly;  2nd=Autumn;   All in favor;  No one opposed

b.       Art Masterpiece –Holly

v      Artist Melonie Stimmell, a Master Street Painter, was to instruct and demonstrate street painting at Waggoner on Oct 17 for the 3-5 graders, in conjunction with the Scottsdale Center for the Arts

v      3-5 graders were to do their own street paintings in grid on the back basketball court; Theme = Nature; medium = soft pastels

v      Due to low donations, the Scottsdale Center for the Arts informed Melonie that they may have to cancel the function.  This would in turn cause a cancellation of her activities at Waggoner.

Ø      Vote:  PTO to buy the $340.48 in chalk.  All in favor; No one opposed

Ø      Vote:  If the Scottsdale Center for the Arts cancels their function and therefore Melonie will not be traveling to Arizona, the PTO shall pay for her airfare of not to exceed $400: 1st=Stacy; 2nd=Kelly; All in favor; No one opposed

c.       Inspiration Award – Leslie

v      District is asking all PTOs to donate to the Inspiration Award to be given to Ron Clark, a highly recognized motivational teacher in Georgia

v      Two teachers will be chosen to attend his academy; teachers must apply

v      At least one Waggoner teacher is very interested

Ø      Vote:  to donate $100-300 to this Inspiration Award; 1st=Stacy; 2nd=Christie; All in favor

d.       Phonics for Reading (3-5 graders):

v      Issue:  to spend $984 to purchase a Teacher and Student Edition

v      This is a supplemental curriculum for intervention for the students behind in reading; problem is growing due to a variety of issues; program is needed to meet the needs of children

v      Program will be used from year to year

v      All teachers will be trained; full lessons are planned; K-2 can use also

v      District will not pay for this supplemental program

v      Program will be used immediately

Ø      Motion:  to purchase this supplemental program for $984
1st= Jenny; 2nd=Holly; 16 in favor; 5 opposed;  Motion Passed

5.      Ballot Issues

a.       Reference fact sheet handout

b.       The School Board is holding a forum Oct 16, 6:30-8:30 at Corona High School

c.       Unification Information – lots of material in mail in order to make an informed decision

6.      Site Council:

a.       Worked on Bylaws; next meeting Oct 16 at 4pm

 

7.      Target Fundraising - Tara:

a.       A great way to make $for Waggoner

b.       Reference handout

c.       Received a $221.29 check today

 

8.      PTO Website - Autumn:

a.       Autumn created and presented the new Waggoner PTO Website!   Waggonerpto.com

b.       Website will contain updates, upcoming events, PTO minutes

c.       Questions received from the website will be brought to each PTO meeting by Autumn for discussion

 

9.      Student Council Liason Needed:

a.       Sheri Merkel volunteered!
