GENERAL PTO MEETING MINUTES

Meeting Called to order 8:16am in the Reading Area

1.                November Minutes:

Ø             Motion to approve: 1st= Kelly;  2nd =  Sheila Woodruffe

2.                Treasurer’s Report  =  Lora Wait

a.                Reviewed Balance Sheet as of Jan 7, 2010

b.                Current assets are $58.9k

c.                Reviewed Profit & loss Nov 1, 2009 thru Jan 6, 2010

d.                Gross profit at $1,239 for last 2 mths

e.                Net income $1,013 for last 2 mths

3.                Teacher Appreciation Candles  =  Lesley/Traci

a.                Teachers were given a wonderfully scented candle with the Waggoner ‘paw’ on the jar;  Teachers were very appreicative

4.                Waggoner Math Program Presentation– Mr. Crain

a.                Brief bio given:  Math coach, has been in the district for 21 yrs, began in 1989 at Norte teaching 2,3,4 grade

b.                Learned about new ways to teach math and decided to become a Math coach

c.                ½ time job; no school funds a full-time position; Mondays and Tuesdays at Menidas; Thursdays & Fridays at Wagg; Wednesdays are shared; funded thru K3 funds; primarily working with students in their classrooms

d.                Mr. Crain works with staff on Wednesdays due to early release

e.                Responsibilities:

·             Professional development: observing teachers; workshops; book studies; embedded lessons

·             Provide direct support to classroom teachers:  curriculum implementation; best practices for instructional delivery; resource implementation; data driven assessments & analysis of student work

·             Educate parents & community 

·             Works within the classroom with child(ren) as opposed to pulling them out of the classroom; small group within classroom environment

·             Instruction:  support to teachers and students; plan & support grade level teams on regular basis;  challenges meeting all needs in large differentiation w/in classrooms

·             Data Driven Decision Making:  review assessment data; provide support in continual assessment develop management & analysis; develop appropriate assessments to support school improvement plan; work with staff to utilize formative and summative data

·             How do we work with students?  Traditional way of teaching; vs “New” way to teach; kids to access skill at the level that they are on; helping children to step up to the next level in their understanding of solving the problem

·             Why?  Different kids, different skills, different needs

·             All have opportunity to grow & improve skills

·             Kids learn divergent ways to solve problems and become more creative in their strategy use depending on the situation and numbers involved

·             Kids need to be problem solvers; we need to give them a toolbox with lots of tools to solve problems. 

f.                 Mr. Crain would like to have a Community/Parent/Staff Math Night in order to share what is happening to improve understanding

 

5.                Upcoming Events

a.                Used Book Fair:  Jan 28 & 29   = Jill Metzger

·             Safeway is expected to donate bags to go home in each backpack; parents to fill with books to sell

·             Ideas of what to do with the leftover books discussed:  Bookmans; donate to public library or Phoenix Children’s Hospital

b.                Kids Helping Kids Week  = Mindy Douglass

·             Still need basics; items divided by grade; donation boxes in office

c.                Friendship Dinner   = Louise Austin & Kerry Mendez

·             The Friendship Dinner is a community building event; not a fundraiser

·             The Purpose of Friendship Dinner will be explained in flyer in a clear manner

·             300 people are expected to attend

·             Marcellos catered last year; $7.50 presale ticket; $9 at door

·             Somburros & Andrews BBQ are being considered for this year; $6-$7/person approximately

·             Raffle tickets & prizes discussed

·             More teachers are needed to participate in this event

Ø             Vote:  Kelly motioned to have the PTO pay for any staff member and their family attending this event

d.                Drama Program  =  Lesley

·             Board discussed a program that Julie T heard about thru another school

·             Chairperson needed; Kerry M volunteered

6.                Requisitions              =   Lesley

a.                Beverage Containers, 2 each, needed for various events; requested by Lisa Ross, $40 each +tax

Ø             Vote:  To purchase 2 beverage containers with PTO funds
1st = Mindy D;  2nd = Courtney;   Yes = all; none opposed; Result = PASSED

b.                Science Grant Supplement to cover $500 in additional charges (shipping & handling) in order to assure that each grade level receives all of their items.  $4950 awarded total to-date.  Providing this $500 will show Waggoner’s commitment to Science and the grant program.

Ø             Vote:  To provide the additional $500 needed for this program from PTO funds

7.                WNO Update   =  Ingrid

a.                Next WNO is January 12, 2010 at Rubio’s, Ray & Rural

b.                February 1st at Tropical Smoothie Café

 

8.                Science Fair Kick Off Assembly      =   Kelly

a.                Grades 3, 4 & 5

b.                Kick off Assembly on Monday, Jan 11

c.                ASU is a participant and is supporting this program!
