GENERAL PTO MEETING MINUTES
February 4, 2010 8:15am

Meeting Called to order 8:15am in the Reading Area
1. January Minutes:
Ø Motion to approve: 1st= Lora ; 2nd = Tiffany
2. Treasurer’s Report = Lora Wait
a. Reviewed Balance Sheet as of Feb 3, 2010
b. Current assets are $58k
c. Reviewed Profit & loss Jan7 thru Feb 3, 2010
d. Gross profit at $3.7k
e. WNO ahead of project goal by $1.4k
f. Box Tops ahead of last year
g. Net income = -$1.1k; spent more than income for the month
3. Safety Committee Presentation = Mrs. Rubocki & Ms. Dedrick
a. Discussed Evacuation and Lockdown Drills: Quick exit; 100% student accountability (red & yellow slips-paper trail of attendance); specific teachers assigned to duties
b. Jan 15 Off Campus Drill – went very well; duration 1 hr
c. Lockdowns – communicated over PA system; students gathered to middle of room; “modified” lockdown of security is known & safe, teaching continues, communication via email, no exterior door exit; “Sweeper” position = someone who ‘sweeps’ general areas for children and directs them to the Health Office or Library until Lockdown is lifted; At recess, all children are directed inside.
d. Each classroom has a Backpack containing all necessary information.
e. Tempe Traffic Related Issues:
· Cars sitting idle westbound on Carver & Terrace are blocking traffic (bike lane). Recommended entry heading East making a left into school. Tempe Police will ticket if they out and enforcing traffic rules. Cars are requested not to park on the unraised sidewalks on Terrace.
· Names in car (manila folder) while in carline is extremely useful; but are not being used by the majority of cars. Suggestion to write names and give it to the driver immediately. 5 people needed to help make signs; Traci E to organize volunteers to make signs each day after school next week.
· Menitas has printed up last name on paper within a sheet protector & given to each family; placed on passenger visor; flips down when needed.
· Suggestion to begin a new program at the first of the next school year.
f. Dismissal: Teacher to walk their class out; students are requested to leave campus as soon as possible.
g. Pictures of Off Campus Evacuation on Jan 15 Reviewed
4. 2010-2011 Nomination Committee
a. Responsible for filling vacant position
b. Gail to lead; helpers needed for committee
c. Gail to send email to all current chairs to see if they will be continuing on
d. Lesley would like to include info into March newsletter
5. Upcoming Events
a. Friendship Dinner = Louise Austin & Kerry Mendez
· Invitations sent out last week with envelopes to make response easier; good response so far
· Good RSVPs from Teachers and Staff
· Kelly to email reminder to liaisons
· Last year was between 200-300 attendees
· If low response, perhaps we cancel the event….25% possible needed
· May be perceived as another WNO, but all participants at same time
· Suggestion to have Mr. Lambros publicize the event on morning announcements
· Teachers need to inform classes; encourage students to come
· Questions: Is there a price break for kids that won’t eat; might be an expensive kids meal
· The Friendship Dinner is a community building event; not a fundraiser
b. Book Fair = Tessa
· Signup passed around
· Feb 23-25
· Bogo
· Change wars; last year earned $2k for library!
· The Change Truck will match funds raised
c. Science Fair = Kelly
· On track; t-shirts arrived; no preorders taken; exact amount ordered;
· Dana meeting with 5th graders; Kelly doing 3rd; volunteers for 4th
· Kids are really working hard & understand that it is a process
· Any science-related professions are needed for judging
d. Teacher Appreciation – Chocolate w/card to each teacher
e. Teacher Training for Dibels = Traci E
Ø Motion: Traci E requesting an additional $400 Staff Appreciation
1st = Kerry; 2nd = Kelly; Yes = 18; Nays = 0; Result = PASSED
6. WNO Update = Ingrid
a. February 1st at Tropical Smoothie Café = $200 raised!@
b. Total raised to-date = $2,972
c. What’s for Dinner = Boston Market Feb 24 & 25 (Parent/Teacher Conferences)
d. March 6th at Great Harvest Bread, 7am to 4pm
e. New Waggoner Night Out date at Polar Ice, May 20
7. Requisitions = Lesley
a. None received
8. Miscellaneous:
a. Cell Tower on Waggoner campus: $20k to district, not to Waggoner; email sent out; location?; Parents need to be informed better; when memo came out the wheels were already in motion; Neighborhood associations not informed either; Lesley to contact the district and discuss issue with Lisa Gibson; Lesley to have more information in March.
b. Gail is the Coordinator for Stanford Children Organization. This organization works on the education issue and has a bond involving only to maintain the current bond, not to increase it. If interested in meeting please contact Gail. Gail will send out more info.
